Feedback Session 1

I got the feedback regarding the plan i handmade and the presentation i had given about my dissertation topic. Basically the presentation seemed to go ok, elements of too much information developed and Simon told me that I should look into psychgeogrhy to gain a further insight into consumerism and mapping of my pratical element. I found this very insightful and had a quick look at the topic, which i found to be of great relevance to my practice.

Richard gave me some feedback on my work so far, the plan i had made needed to be cut down and simplified in order for me to gain clarity and perspective from the research i had undertaken.

We decided to re-write the chapters under new headings as followed :

This gave me more structure to begin to write the essay and allowed me to focus my ideas more steadily enabling me to identify and learn through my research and writing.

I don't have the best writing style, but using a simple methodology of communication studies and focus on specific campaign and design techniques allows me to really focus and gain a more insight.

I believe that Richards feedback has really pointed me in the right direction and pushed my research to gain more detail and clarity. I hope this structure can be applied to my writing!

Lecture 1 : CoP3 Aims + Synthesis

The main points I picked from this Lecture :

1. The synthesis between written and pratical elements must be clear + defined in relation to graphic design.

2. The Research needs to be considered and have broad depth and analysis

3. You NEED a methodology to make the essay plausible.

EXAMPLE of a good body of research: linked well to pratical aspects:

An epic body of work by Los Angeles photographic artist Allan Sekula, Fish Story was created over a five-year period of research that included travel to industrial ports all over the world. This project explored the historical, sociopolitical, aesthetic, and literary connections among such far-flung port cities as New York, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Seoul. Consisting of a sequence of 105 large-scale, color photographs interspersed with narrative panels authored by Sekula, as well as two slide projections, Fish Story wove an intricate web of visual and verbal associations among panoramic views of the sea, detailed close-ups of nautical devices, cargo containers, warehouses, sailors, and shipyard workers, locating the individual elements in an ever-shifting cross-current of global exchange: of goods, money, knowledge, and power. This exhibition was organized by Chris Dercon for the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and was accompanied by a full-color catalog.

First Plan and First Draft

First Plan Draft

The plan is critical for an essay to be formed, the idea of basing all the research i have collected into a format that makes sense. Creating definitive chapters with research divided makes the essay easier to write.

First Plan

Re- Drafted Version of Plan

With this version of the paln i wanted to create a detailed approach. The chapter do however get slightly muddled up as too much detail makes the plan too busy.

However the main stages i feel will work in order for me to develop my idea.

Chapter 1:

Emergence of branding

Chapter 2 :

A communication approach

Chapter 3:

Case Study

Ideas for the Practical

Ideas for the Practical CoP3

Coming up with a lot of ideas at first was the best thing to do as it broadened my design perspective. All the ideas link to consumption but i feel that i could push it further to define a clearer message that relates more specifically to sections of my research in detail, however i do feel that these ideas are a basis and can be worked on and talked about further.
