The Value of Art vs Graphic Design - Seminar

THE VALUES OF ART AND GRAPHIC DESIGN ARE QUITE DIFFERENT. THE USE OF DIFFERENT SKILLS AND OPINIONS COMES INTO PLAY WHEN DISCUSSING THIS.
Heir achy of art and Graphic Design according to Marshall arisman:
  • Fine Art is Pure
  • Illustration is the beginning of selling out
  • graphic Design is commercial art
  • Advertising is selling-Period
  • General attitude in art and Design institutes
  • Abstract versions of purity
  • Fine Art is still selling out, pure is a myth

Fine Art - As a group we developed points that are cohesive with writers who discuss these matters. The idea that fine art becomes quite self induced in a small community offers a slightly pretentious vibe to all forms of work developed.
  • More expensive and valuable
  • Doesn't have to be understood
  • More unique and more aimed at one persons opinions and one point of view
  • Interesting for an individual
  • Doesn't have to have a concept
  • Opinionated of certain likes and dislikes
  • People Interpretate art in their own way
  • Art doesn't concentrate on communication
  • Art is exhibited in Museums and Galleries
  • Only has to be produced once
  • There is no logical way Art can be measured
  • Label of high culture
  • Social statement viewed by society of the higher class
Graphic Design- As a mass producer of all kinds of information/ ideas and expression, graphic design is seen as a lower form of art and expression. In this heir achy of art, fine art snubs the way graphic designers work. Because of working for a client (Which i think requires a lot more skill) Fine artists allow the fact that they can indulge in ideas and brief that are the complete creating of themselves. They feel like they don't have to answer to anyone.
  • More socially useful
  • More specialised in the communication
  • Has to be understood
  • Designed for a purpose
  • Influences people
  • Concepts involved
  • Communicated within the masses
  • Getting a direct message across
  • Used outdoors and in industries
  • Mass production
  • Costs less/cheap
  • Design can be measured
Art vs Communication Design:
  • Art is Ambiguity or complexity of meaning
  • Graphic Designers work for a client, whereas art is free
  • The designer as wage labour
  • Art is more Cultural Significant
  • Art is the Exression and individuality
  • Creativity/Problem solving- Graphic Designers are problem solvers
  • Functionality- graphic design is very Functional, whereas Art isn't
Edouard Manet, Un Bar aux Folies-Bergere, 1882
  • The painting develops a double meaning. You feel that the inebriation is with a man as seen in the reflection but you can't see there face so it places you as the audience to feel part of the image. The woman reflection is also misplaced and fundamental to the image. The woman does not appear happy but isolated and facing away from the crowd. The meaning could be society, not fitting in? but not knowing what the piece is about leaves it open to interpretation and views which is credited in the fine art world.

Sigmor Polke (1969)
The Higher Powers Command: Paint the Upper Right Corner Black!
  • This fine art piece has a cleaver meaning, by painting the right hand corner in which is ordered in the statement.
  • This could be interoperated by saying that people do what they are asked of, without it actually making sense.
  • obscure meaning, doesn't want to understand, this make sit more of a clever and interesting.
  • More intellectually then you.
  • Been ambitious make you appear more clever and doesn't aim to be understood.

Allen Hori (1989)
  • This Poster is a typography poster, based on words and language
  • It is concerned with post-structuralist theory in Graphic Design.
  • Graphic designers allowing expression through type and produce a lot of images/ designs for various reasons.
  • Bright colours - looks quite odd for graphic design

We looked at the use of artists and how they influence their work. This piece by Hurst was only the idea. The rest of the work including the build and finish of the product was someone else.
  • There is no skill involved in his work particularly, as they wasn't made by him.
  • Most of his work was  exhibited in the exhibition, ‘Sensation’.
Cultural significance
  • Graphic design in my opinion requires more skills.
  • Art is more challenging, lasts forever.
